The Story
31 Benning Place is the true-life story of Karen raised in south-central Los Angeles and how she became one of the first African American Female firefighters/paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). With the support of her family, Karen dealt with poverty, hunger, crime, sickness, housing, divorce, and single motherhood. Firefighting was not a lifelong dream of Karen; she was laid off from her nursing job; she had two kids to raise. When she discovered LAFD was looking for women and provided great pay significant benefits. She was determined to get this job and succeed, and no one was going to stop her; she had two sons to raise. After enduring the exasperating application and training course (tearing up her application, failing background checks, extra work, sexism, racism), she not only succeeded she was even named Firefighter of the year. She did this even though she had to endure the unthinkable tragedy, the senseless murder of her older sister / best friend, Pamela.
